Arcadia Bird Sanctuary

Through an entertaining mix of tricks, facts and stories, people learn about exotic birds and how to care for them. We discuss what birds make good pets and what should not be considered in a home. Questions are encouraged and discussion is lively as the birds are introduced.

The Arcadia Bird Sanctuary and Educational Center, in Freehold , New Jersey,
will display many different species of pet birds, such as parrots, parakeets and lovebirds. This sanctuary was born in the rubble of the World Trade Center. Amidst the devastation and human misery, a call was issued for animal rescue in general and bird rescue in particular. Terri Jones, a Certified Avian Specialist, was called in to help shelter dozens of pet birds, and Arcadia Bird Sanctuary was born. Terri will bring some beautiful birds for display and will be on hand to provide accurate information and education to current and future owners of companion birds.

Crossfire Kennels and Staton Gun Dogs

The dog training segments at this show have always drawn a large audience. This year will be no exception as Judi and Stephen Ware of Crossfire Kennels illustrate the training of German Shorthaired Pointers.

Steve has competed in the show ring, hunt tests and field trials, training and successfully competing with many "bird dog" breeds.

John Staton, of Staton Gun Dogs, originally trained Labrador Retrievers and horses, but found his true niche in training after he adopted his rescue pointer, Flash from Judi and Stephen Ware in 1990. As he developed Flash, he realized that he loved training upland bird dogs and Staton Gun Dogs was born! Over the years the two families have bonded and started training dogs together.

Jointly they will present the dog training demonstrations all days of the event and will be available for talking to dog owners about teaching the skills necessary to train a solid hunting companion.

NJ Division of Parks and Forestry:  K-9 Tracking Dogs

These K-9 tracking dogs are used to help the wildfire investigator by tracking the scent of a suspect from the scene; giving the investigator direction of travel, possible witnesses, and a more defined search area. The mere presence of the dogs has convinced two suspects to admit to lighting wildfires. The K-9 team has been utilized to assist in several wildfire investigations to date. The bloodhounds have also found use in the search for lost persons in rural and forested areas. The K-9 team has been utilized on two searches over the past year.

Another use of these scent dogs is to enhance our public information campaign. Over the past year, the K-9 team has taken part in over 110 informational programs with over 8,800 direct contacts. During the programs, the public receives fire prevention and enforcement education, with the scent dogs being the catalyst for interaction. People love the bloodhounds, drawing larger crowds, and initiating more questions
